The Lost Art of Journaling
by Sue Miley
I think of journaling as a combination of artistic outlet, historian, and therapist. First, a few journaling tips from an avid, self-taught journaler. You may laugh at the "self-taught" reference and wonder what is such a big deal. After several shots at getting it right through my "gratitude journal, creative journal, prayer journal, VENTING journal, diary of events, and even a poetry journal" I discovered it is very easy to over complicate the process. So here are my tips for beginners:
- Only keep one journal at a time. Everything goes in it. I write my journals all to God. He wants to be with us always, so rather than discern what He wants to here or doesn't, I just let him decide.
- Try "stream of consciousness" writing at first. This means write down whatever comes to mind regardless of the topic. This really let's down the formality of trying to get it right and helps you to just start getting it out!
- When stuck, pick a topic to journal on. There are books and websites with a ton of topics. We will keep a weekly exercise on our website also. Just check out this Link for the weekly topic.
- Vary your writing. It can be lists one day and prose the next. You can write your prayers and you can give "thanks" for your blessings. I even look at budgets and practice some time management planning in my journal. Don't feel constrained for structure. Only embrace structure if it is truly you.
- Review your writings monthly, quarterly and yearly. Check off answered prayers. See how you guided your life through the period rather than let life guide you. It is all part of the process.
Remember, journaling is an expression of you. Be authentic. Have fun. Check back with us for weekly topics and tips.
