Just Do It!
by Sue Miley
Martha was having a bad day. Nothing was going right and she knew why. It was her horrible boss. She was busy talking to a coworker about how their boss has no personal life and expects everyone who works for her to give up their personal life too. Then a friend calls and she continues to lambaste her boss. Her friend has a heart for God and questioned Martha about her boss’ faith. Martha said that it was obvious to her that God was not in her boss’ life. Satan maybe, but not God. Her friend gently suggested that maybe Martha should share her faith with her boss and see if she could support her if she obviously had some spiritual needs. She also boldly asked Martha if talking about her is something that God would will for Martha. Martha sighed and said to her friend that she wasn’t sure what God would have her do and that she would just have to pray about it!
Do you think Martha doesn’t know what God would want her to do? Do you think there is any question that God would be against her “gossip”? Is there any question that God wants us to share our faith? Have you ever been in this situation? Clearly you are challenged by a difficult situation. You are handling it in your flesh and when challenged, we procrastinate and say – I will pray about it. When God’s guidance and will are clearly spelled out in the bible we do not need to pray to figure out what God would have us do. We need to just do it! We may need to pray for strength to do it, for discipline, for patience, for timing, for desire…. We most definitely need God in all we do – but many times His will is clear. We need to just decide if we are willing to follow Him.
This is just a little bitty example. Life-changing things come up just as often:
- A divorced parent trying to keep their child from seeing their X-spouse.
- A spouse praying for God to tell them if they should stay married.
- People reacting to each other with an “eye for an eye” perspective.
We all sin. We all make mistakes. That has been foretold. However, what about the things we struggle with in advance of acting. The things that we pre-meditate. We don’t wake up one day and accidentally slip and file for divorce. We don’t call ten people to complain about our boss and believe in our heart our tongue just got the best of us.
God doesn’t promise us in His Word that life will be easy and that if we follow Him things will work out perfectly. However, God gives us His Word as a way to live because our all knowing Father wants to protect us from the consequences of our actions. Sometimes he guides us in things that may not fit perfectly in our life here, but he has eternal reasons. If we believe Jesus is the Truth, and the Way, and the Light, why do we choose to follow and react to people and not Christ?
That is a rhetorical question that actually has a hundred reasons and excuses. But, I would challenge each of us to reduce the conflict and stress in our lives by following Christ when we clearly know what He would do. I would challenge us to use our prayer time to gain Christ’s wisdom and strength. I would pray for the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in us in order that we can more easily follow God’s will. And, in things that are not clearly spelled out for us by God, pray for His will to be done! I am so confident in this advice because God loves us. He gave His one and only son for us. He provides His Holy Spirit to guide us. And He already knows how things turn out. So, in these cases when God has clearly provided us His will and His wisdom, we need not make excuses or pray for His will. We need to just do it!
